Community Investments

Endeavour Silver has a long history of investing in our host communities to help foster their social and economic well-being. Our community investment is focused on four strategic lines of work: Education, local economic development, community infrastructure and environment. These are all important to share the gains of mining with the local people and region.

As a result of our consultations with local communities around Terronera that helped us identify local priorities, we have invested in the following initiatives:

Education

Education

Examples include an after-school homework program, student scholarships to support youth and families with continued education, and learning tablets for students, which we donated during the pandemic to support online learning.

Community infrastructure

Community infrastructure

We helped the Santiago de los Pinos community enhance its public spaces, including a school, bridges and the main plaza. Endeavour contributed materials to enable the improvements. We also collaborated with the Municipality of San Sebastián del Oeste to improve solid waste disposal. Our local team supported efforts to improve the operation of the land fill area, which will extend the facility's life. Endeavour also donated a garbage collection truck to the municipality.

Local economic development

Local economic development

We have supported a program for local and regional suppliers to generate employment opportunities and improve economic activity in the region and are in the process of developing a regional supplier’s program that will be able to provide services to the project.

Environment

Environment

As part of the EP4 requirements, we have carried out a number of environmental studies to understand the natural environment and define what needs to be done to mitigate the impact in fauna and flora. The biodiversity action plan, which is under development, will outline these actions.

We also operate a dedicated Community House staffed by Endeavour personnel, which offers activities that promote local participation, which could be educational, sports or culture related, with a focus on inclusion and diversity. We also have a grievance mechanism in place, through which any community member can express their concerns related to the Terronera project activities.

Preparing for the Future

With the Terronera mine still under construction (planned launch in late 2024), we are using this time to understand the needs in the community and how to best address the impacts. We will increase our activities as the project advances.

  • Livelihood restoration plan. As families were impacted by the change of use in the land, renting it now to the company, we will be working with the impacted families to provide support on alternative livelihood options.
  • Ecosystem services. We are conducting an evaluation to understand how the community uses the natural resources around the project area and how we can best support that these uses continue along with the activities of the project.
  • Tourism stakeholder engagement. We are working with local organizations to understand their needs to enhance and promote tourism in the area to identify the most important initiatives we can support.
  • Other local needs. Our community house continues to host activities such as homework support for kids and local cultural or religious celebrations.
