Community Relations
In tandem with project development, we maintain a community relations program focused on building and maintaining respectful, strong and positive relationships with communities impacted by, or with an interest in, Terronera’s mining activities.
There are four local communities near our Terronera Project: San Sebastián del Oeste, Santiago de Los Pinos, Los Reyes, and La Estancia de Landeros, all of which are within the municipality of San Sebastián del Oeste, Jalisco. This municipality has 5,086 inhabitants, according to the federal Mexican census of 2020.
Stakeholder Engagement
We engage with these local communities and inhabitants to listen to their perspectives, share information about the Terronera Project, encourage public participation as the Project progresses, and collaborate on local priorities related to the environment, cultural protection and socio-economic development. To date, the local communities are in favour of resource development and the potential economic benefits, especially employment.
Our engagement takes place continuously through the Community Relations staff that operate out of the Community house in Santiago de Los Pinos. They have daily communication with a number of stakeholders to implement community programs as well as to address complaints related to the operation.
The Issues that Matter Most
In addition, every two or three years we perform a comprehensive “materiality assessment” exercise to gather community input and identify the evolving issues that matter most to our stakeholders. Our latest assessment occurred in 2021 and informed the development of our Sustainability Strategy 2022-2024. Human Rights
Human rights is a priority wherever we operate. Our commitment to protecting and promoting human rights has long been embedded in Endeavour’s Code of Conduct. We also have a Human Rights Policy that outlines our goal to integrate human rights best practices into the Company’s management and governance structures and programs. The policy is aligned with the United Nations’ Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises, and the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights Initiative.
Recently, we carried out a human rights assessment for our Terronera Project, to better understand our exposure to possible human rights risks from the project’s activities. One of the key learnings from the assessment is the need to provide specialized training to employees to increase their knowledge of how human rights applies to their daily jobs. As a result, we have provided training for our Terronera staff. A human rights specialist led a two-day workshop that covered topics such as human rights and supply chains, the relevance of the UN’s Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, and the importance of human rights policies, management systems, due diligence, monitoring and reporting.
